The prints
Every print is made from my own work, rendered by the program at full size rather than enlarged from a smaller file, and printed at a fine-art press. The paper is named in each listing — 250 gsm archival matte paper for most of them.
Screens and paper do not agree with each other. Expect the colour you receive to be close to the photograph, not identical to it.
What "unique" means
A print marked unique is made once. Its number was drawn once, the program was run once from it, the sheet was printed once, and then the piece was retired — it will not be reprinted, resized, or listed again, here or anywhere else. The word is printed in the bottom margin of the sheet itself, where it is a statement about that object rather than a line of advertising.
This is the difference between these and open-edition prints, which are sold repeatedly and are the honest majority of prints sold online. Nothing is wrong with an open edition. This simply is not one.
A unique piece that sells stays in the shop, marked sold. Watching the shelf empty is the point.
Why each work is only one size
Each work is made at one size. The program solves the composition for the proportions it is given, so the same number at a different shape is not the same picture cropped — it is a different picture. Offering a size menu would mean showing you a square and posting you a rectangle.
The sizes are chosen to fit stock frames; Framing, below, says which frame takes which.
Framing
Prints arrive unframed. Every size but the largest is a standard frame size, so the sheet drops straight into an off-the-shelf frame — no trimming and no custom framing quote waiting for you after delivery.
- 30 × 40 cm (11.8 × 15.7 in) fits standard 30 × 40 cm frames, such as IKEA RIBBA.
- 35 × 35 cm (13.8 × 13.8 in) fits standard 35 × 35 cm frames, such as IKEA SANNAHED.
- 50 × 50 cm (19.7 × 19.7 in) fits standard 50 × 50 cm frames, such as IKEA SANNAHED.
- 50 × 70 cm (19.7 × 27.6 in) fits standard 50 × 70 cm frames, such as IKEA RIBBA.
- 100 × 100 cm (39.4 × 39.4 in) has no stock frame and will need one made for it.
The size in each listing is the size of the sheet, which is what frames are sold by. The artwork sits inside a white border printed on the sheet itself, so if your frame comes with a mount, leave it out — the border already does that job.
Prints travel rolled. Lay yours flat under a few books for a day before framing it and it will sit flat behind the glass.
Signed prints
Some work is offered as a signed print: made at a fine-art lab on Hahnemühle paper, with the bottom margin left blank and the title, the word unique, my signature and the year written into it in pencil.
Printed captions read as reproduction and pencil reads as an original print; that distinction is most of what separates the two. Signed prints are inspected and packed by hand, so they take longer to reach you.
Your certificate
Every print comes with a certificate naming the work, the number it was generated from, the size, and the date it was issued. It is generated from the studio's own register rather than filled in by hand, so it cannot disagree with my records. Unique prints get it by email; signed prints get a printed copy in the parcel.
Original works
Originals are not sold through this shop. They are enquiry-only: if a work is listed as available, write to me and we will talk.
Ordering and payment
Prices are in US dollars and include worldwide shipping. Payment is handled by Stripe on their own secure page — your card details never reach this site.
Dispatch and delivery
Orders are dispatched within 7-10 business days, and usually sooner. Prints are made to order — nothing sits in a drawer waiting — so the window covers printing as well as posting. You will get an email when your parcel is on its way, tracked wherever the destination allows it.
Smaller prints ship flat between boards; larger ones ship rolled in a tube.
Customs and import duties
For most destinations your print is made at a press in your own country, or a neighbouring one, and arrives as an ordinary domestic parcel: no customs form, no import VAT, no courier handling fee.
Where the press network does not reach, and for signed prints, which are packed and posted by hand, a parcel may attract import VAT or duty on arrival. Those charges are set by your own country, are not included in the price, and are yours to pay — I have no way to settle them on your behalf.
Please do not refuse a parcel to avoid them. A refused parcel is treated as a change-of-mind return, and the postage both ways comes out of the refund.
Returns
You can return a print for any reason. Tell me within 14 days of it arriving, and post it back within 14 days of telling me.
Send it back as it came — rolled in its tube or flat in its board, unframed, unmounted, untrimmed. Unrolling a print to look at it is expected and costs you nothing. Framing it, mounting it, trimming the border or writing on it cannot be undone, and I will reduce the refund by the value lost — up to the whole price if the print can no longer be sold.
If a certificate came with the print, send it back too. It says the work was issued once, to you, and it cannot be in two places.
Return postage is yours, and it must be tracked. I refund when the parcel reaches me or when you show me proof of posting, whichever comes first — and without tracking there is no proof of posting. A signed print ships from Switzerland and has to come back to Switzerland, which is not cheap; factor that in before you order one.
I refund what you paid, within 14 days.
If it arrives damaged, don't send it back. Photograph the print and the packaging within a week and I will print it again and ship the replacement at my cost. Returning a damaged print costs you postage and gets us both nowhere.
Commissions cannot be returned. They are made to your brief, and there is nobody else they are for.
A returned unique or signed print is not resold. It was sold once and that stands.
Copyright
Buying a print buys the print. Copyright in the image stays with me, so prints are for private enjoyment — not for reproduction, commercial use, resale as an image, or use as training data for machine learning systems.
Licensing an image for a book, a record sleeve or anything else is a conversation I am glad to have. Ask.
Commissions
Sometimes, depending on what else is on. Tell me what you have in mind.
